Japan Ski Tours and Snowboarding Trip - Tohoku Backcountry

Day 1: Arrival in Aomori, Japan

Following your landing in Aomori you make use of a local transfer to reach Hakkoda where you settle in your hotel. You meet all the other members and your guiding team to go through the details of the upcoming week. Stay traditional Japanese ryokan in Hakkoda Drive 0h (airport transfer time ~0h45)

Day 2: Hakkoda Backcountry

Good morning! Today, your guide will brief you on current snow and weather conditions, explain avalanche risks, and provide avalanche safety packs. After a quick rescue skills drill, you and your guide will plan the day based on weather trends, your preferences, and safety considerations. During the coming two days, you take best advantage of the weather, following your guides selection of the best lines to tour the Hakkoda mountains. Stay traditional Japanese ryokan in Hakkoda Drive ~0h45

Day 3: Hakkoda Backcountry

You continue your discovery of Hakkoda backcountry or Mount Iwaki. **Stay** high-end hotel or traditional Japanese ryokan in Hakkoda **Drive** ~0h45, 1h15 if going to Mt Iwaki

Day 4: Mt. Iwaki backcountry and transfer to Hachimantai

Today is a transfer day to Hachimantai, however before leaving the region you want to pay visit to the local sleeping giant: Mount Iwaki. A dormant volcano perfectly located nearby the sea of Japan to receive copious amounts of dry precipitation with jaw dropping topography mixing forested steeps and alpine drops and rolls. At the end of a rewarding day, you reach your comfortable hotel in Hachimantai where we will stage our adventures for the following days. Stay Hachimantai high-end hotel Drive 1h00 in AM, 2h00~2h30 in PM (depending on road and weather conditions)

Day 5: Hachimantai cat access Backcountry

Our next playground, a former ski resort with serious terrain converted to a cat skiing and touring paradise. We join forces with local guides to ride the most iconic lines under the blue sky or in the middle of a raging snow storm. **Stay** Hachimantai high-end hotel **Drive** 0h30 AM, 0h30 PM

Day 6: Hachimantai & Appi Kōgen touring

Exploiting the goods of Hachimantai one more day, we tour from the famous Appi Kogen ski area after a warm-up lap or directly head up into the backcountry for a longer tour from a quaint Onsen village. Stay Tazawa lake traditional onsen lodge (shared bath) Drive 1h30 in PM

Day 7: Tazawa Lake and Mt. Akita Komagatake

We wake up to the beautiful area of Tazawa lake, or maybe a complete white out! We will make the best from this day in a landscape from outer space with vast untracked slopes from former ski resorts, seductive ridges and spacious birch forests before a well deserved onsen soak, fresh beer and traditional dinner. **Stay** Tazawa Lake traditional onsen lodge (shared bath) **Drive** 0h15 in AM and PM

Day 8: Time to say « Mata ne »!

**Train or flight to Tokyo from Morioka** In the morning, we provide assistance with your transfer to reach the Morioka train station. There you will be able to connect to Tokyo and your further destination of choice with the efficient Shinkansen, the Japanese bullet train. **Drive** 1h in AM

01. When is the best time to visit Japan for skiing or snowboarding?

The ultimate is January and February but the season runs from December to March

03. Whats included in the cost of the trip?

  • Accommodations with breakfast as mentioned in the program above, total 7 nights in a traditional Japanese inn and/or a western style mountain hotel (option to upgrade)
  • Transfers as follows:
    • all transportation on the ground in the group setting.
  • Ski/snowboard guide services as mentioned above (total 6 days) with private transportation on these days
  • Ski passes for the 6 days of skiing
  • On-call or online support while in Japan (upon a reasonable extent)

04. Whats not included?

  • Touring ski or snowboard, poles, boots and avalanche safety pack rentals (can be organized upon request)
  • Meals other than breakfast.
  • Your guide’s tip: though Japan is a not tipping country, they will understand your appreciation of their services carried out this way.
  • Entrance to the visited sites (if applicable)
  • Communication package (SIM card, WIFI router available upon request)
  • Personal purchases such as souvenirs, gifts, etc.
  • Travel and mountain rescue insurances : out of bound riding is outside the ski resorts area of operations (with few exceptions) and requires paid external fees in case of a rescue.
  • Banking, credit card and/or international transaction fee. Note: we accept and recommend the use of Wise money transfer services to minimize these fees.

05. What are your cancellation policies

  • Once trip is confirmed: 30% of total price (100% of down payment)
  • 30 to 16 days prior to tour start date: 50% of total price
  • 15 days and less prior to tour start date: 100% of total price
